Resources for Wingate University Students - Wingate University Athletics (1)

General

Wingate, N.C.----The past few weeks have been challenging for everyone as we go through this global pandemic. Wingate students are finishing the semester at home and we want to be as helpful as possible. Below are all of the resources provided by the university, from the calendar and academic resources, to counseling and mental health tips.

Academic Calendar

  • The University will continue to follow the WU Spring Semester 2020 Academic Calendar for the rest of the semester.
  • This means that Easter Friday (April 10) and the Monday after Easter (April 13) are University holidays for our students, faculty and staff.
  • The Undergraduate Final Exam Schedule will be Wednesday, April 29, through Saturday, May 2, and Monday, May 4, through Tuesday, May 5.
    • Faculty have been notified that classes should not be held during the designated times for finals.
    • Read more in this letter from Nancy Randall, Vice Provost for Student Engagement.

Academic Resources

  • Peer tutoring through the ARC will continue during this time over Zoom. Students can sign up for tutoring on TutorTrac (wingate.go-redrock.com), and will be sent instructions from their tutor on how to access the Zoom meeting. If students need help on how to set up a tutoring appointment, they may watch this YouTube video for more information: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t3sParZCQuI&feature=youtu.be
  • Any questions should be directed to Laura Parker at l.parker@wingate.edu.
  • Supplemental Instruction (SI): SI will now take place as a "Conference" on the class Canvas page. Students should receive a communication from their SI leader about whether the time of the class SI sessions will be changing. Students can access the SI session on their class Canvas page under "Conferences" at the time the session is meant to start by clicking "Join." The SI Session should be set to record and can be accessed by students in the class for up to 14 days after the session has taken place. Any questions should be directed to either your class SI leader or to Laura Parker at l.parker@wingate.edu.

Writing Center

  • Students (and faculty) can submit papers to this link for the Writing Center Canvas course. Any questions should be directed to Kevin Winchester at kwinches@wingate.edu.

Counseling

Wellness At Home

  • The Wingate Counseling Center presents Wellness At Home, a virtual support group for students to have a safe space to discuss, vent, and cope with the realities of Covid-19.
  • This group will meet on Wednesdays and Fridays and is open to all students.
  • Please contact kath.smith@wingate.edu for additional information.

Services

  • Our counseling services are only available to students who live in North Carolina due to licensing laws. If you are out of state, we can assist you via email and/or with a brief phone consultation to end counseling and/or transfer to local services.
  • If you are a new client looking for services, we are offering same-day consultation appointments over the phone to assess your needs and work with you on problem-solving the issue at hand. Each clinician will work with you on figuring out any phone follow-up meetings and referral to a local clinician if needed. Please email counseling@wingate.edu and include available times (EST) in the coming week and the best phone number to reach you.

Tips for Mental Health....

  • As you experience anxiety, remember that it is natural and normal in situations like this. Also, it is normal to have some level of anxiety about having anxiety (funny how that works). Ironically, accepting anxiety and not letting the fear of it overwhelm you is one of the best ways to manage anxiety. When waves of coronavirus anxiety show up, notice and describe the experience to yourself or others without judgment. Resist the urge to escape or calm your fears by obsessively reading virus updates. Facing anxiety in the moment will lead to less anxiety over time.
  • Reaching out to people you trust is one of the best ways to reduce anxiety, depression, loneliness, and boredom during social distancing, quarantine, and isolation. You can work to stay connected to others by creating group chats with friends and family, talk "face to face" with friends and loved ones using Skype or FaceTime, or Call SAMHSA's free 24-hour Disaster Distress Helpline at 1-800-985-5990, if you feel lonely or need support.
  • For many of you, anxiety and fears about the coronavirus are compounding symptoms you have already been working to cope with. The coping skills that you have been developing are applicable in these situations as well. It can be easy to forget everything you have learned in times of panic, but it's important to remember the tried-and-true anxiety prevention and reduction strategies that work for you. Skills such as deep breathing and connecting to loved ones are helpful in multiple situations. Focus on what you can control to prevent obsessive, uncontrollable thoughts. Create a routine that has elements of your normal, daily life to avoid an overexposure to news and media that can perpetuate excessive thoughts and anxiety. We recommend limiting your exposure to coronavirus news to no more than 30 minutes per day.
  • The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has guidance on managing mental health and coping during COVID-19 for children and caregivers.
  • The World Health Organization (WHO) has information on travel, media resources, and other research on COVID-19.
  • SAMHSA has released a fact sheet that explains social distancing, quarantine, and isolation in the event of an infectious disease outbreak. It discusses feelings and thoughts that may arise during this time and suggests ways to cope and support oneself during such an experience.
  • People who already are managing existing mental health conditions should prioritize self-care during difficult times and should contact their clinicians if they have questions or concerns. Wingate Counseling Center staff can be reached at counseling@wingate.edu or 704-233-8979 Mondays-Fridays from 9am-5pm. After hours, the campus community can contact Wingate Campus Safety at 704-233-8999 and Residence Life On Call staff number at 980-210-4950. To reach the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, call 1-800-273-TALK (8255). Text "START" to 741-741 to reach the Crisis Text Line.
