Synopsis
Valentine’s Day 1945. A ritual murder in rural Britain. A new horror is born.
The Last Sacrifice delves into the real-life 1945 witchcraft killing of Charles Walton—the terrifying event that inspired The Wicker Man and birthed the folk horror genre. This unsettling true-crime interrogation probes into the eerie, enigmatic cultural undercurrents that shaped 1970's folk horror genre, leaving an indelible mark on cinema and public psyche. The Last Sacrifice uncovers an unflinching portrayal of Britain's profound identity crisis, both during the tumultuous early 1970s and the resurgence of folk horror today, ominously coinciding with yet another national descent into madness. Its conclusion: The Wicker Man is more fact than fiction.

overall could have benefit from a stronger sense of direction - tried to cover a lot of ground but ultimately the ideas got lost and it didn’t say much. the pacing also struggled, felt stuck in a 20-ish minute loop

FrightFest Glasgow: Film 3
A charming and fascinating mix-media documentary covering Britain’s dark history of witchcraft.

a super informative documentary about the origins of british folk horror movies.
a moderately informative documentary about what didn’t kill an old man in the 1940s

The editing is what makes this work, but it really shines when it's humorous. Loved when that guy experienced bi panic, then had an exorcism where the priest laced his fingers through the dude's hair and shook him violently at eye-level with his pelvis. Also loved the entire confessional of the woman who was indoctrinated into a coven on film. Died when a guy said something along the lines of 'the last scene of The Wicker Man is both laughable and horrific, at the same time, and that's sort of the essence of England.' Extra special shout out to the epilogue, ended on a really fun note.

Epilogue was the highlight.

The true GOAT of this documentary is that woman Janet recounting her experience of the coven initiation, what a storyteller. I really like the core idea here of exploring a darkness at the heart of moment in British history through the prism of the art produced during the period, and the use of old folk-horror images and footage in here is quite effective, but thought it was just a tad too disorganised in construction to 100% nail the central idea. Directed by Ken Russell’s son, bizarrely.

A bit long and drawn out. Epilogue was fun though!

Interesting and well made documentary. A bit long for its premise and the focus was lost a few times, but I'm sure the editing process was a nightmare.
