Obituaries usually begin with the name, age, and place of residence of the deceased, along with the date and place of death. The cause of death is something many families wonder if they should include.

22 to 24 lb paper is a step up from copier paper and will allow less "show-through" of printing from side to side. It may not fold as cleanly as a heavier weight paper. 28 to 32 lb paper has a crisp, professional look and will produce attractive mementos, no matter what design you choose.

The late Douglas Legler, from Fargo, North Dakota, may have the funniest and most concise obituary ever. The whole obituary reads "Doug Died." And that's exactly the way he wanted it. Legler died at 85 years old on June 27, and his local paper, The Forum, ran the obituary at his family's request Wednesday.

When writing an obituary, leave out details that could be used for identity theft, such as the deceased's date and place of birth, middle name, maiden name and mother's maiden name. And don't include the deceased's home address.

Some families make the final line a dedication honoring their loved one. Phrases like “We will always carry your memory in our hearts,” or perhaps a favorite quote of your loved one are heartfelt and personal. Other families select a short prayer, a religious quotation, or a line from a poem to place at the end.

Opt for a solo photo of your loved one over a group shot.

First, it could make it impossible for people to find your loved one in a small group photo. It could also confuse them and make it hard for them to figure out who actually died. It's best to go with a photo featuring just your loved one.

Why does it cost so much to post an obituary? Publishing an obituary in the newspaper is expensive because of the limited space papers have. Newspapers value every inch of each page, so they must charge to use that limited space for an obituary.

A Simple Short Obituary Example Template

There is no specific rule that requires you to publish an obituary right away. In most cases, people aim to publish an obituary 1-2 weeks following the passing of a loved one. However, publishing it months or even a year after a loved one's death is completely okay.

Start with the facts: the deceased's full name, how old they were, the date they died, and who they are survived by in their family. Give factual details of their life: educational degrees, professional titles and awards, and how long they've been with or married to their partner, etc.
